Capo Verde

By an unbelievable luck I hitchhiked my first boat at Las Palmas - Canary Islands. After eight days on the sea pursuing the West-African coast we embarked on the archipelago of Capo Verde.

An old Portuguese colony. Every island seems to hide a secret. I was told that on Fogo the ''Fire Island'', there are women with green eyes. Down the volcano harvesting coffee. During my time on Capo Verde I was searching. Last day before embarking on the 23 days long journey on the Atlantic Ocean I met a woman waiting for her fisherman - suddenly she looked at me with her green jade eyes.

The abundant green island named Santo Antão keeps the secret - how to survive without many days of rain. Maybe the secret is to drink the white rum, ''Grogo'' to forget the troubles.

I watch with fascination the extermination of great tuna catched by hands away from the inhabited islands.

It is in Mindelo on the island of São Vincente that I make my last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
